Wasp Nest Removal

People everywhere fear wasps due to their stingers and their tendency to swarm. There are hundreds of different species of wasps, ranging in size from microscopic to over an inch long. Some have yellow or black and yellow stripes, while others have translucent wings that give them a ghostly appearance. When you are thinking about wasp nest removal, it is very important to find an experienced and skilled pest control technician to remove the nest safely and properly so as not to harm yourself or others in the area around your property.

The Different Types of Wasps

There are many different types of wasps in Canada. For example,

Yellow Jackets

Yellow jackets are mostly yellow in color with black stripes. They’re considered social wasps, meaning they live in colonies and have a caste system. The queen is larger than her workers, which can be identified by their smaller size and lighter coloring. Workers typically feed on nectar, fruit juices and tree sap. Yellow jackets make nests underground or in cavities found within walls of buildings. They may also choose to build them above ground, such as under eaves or deck railings. When disturbed, yellow jackets will bite and sting. The stinger is located at the end of its abdomen; it delivers venom into its victim through pores in its abdomen (rather than through a stinger). When threatened, it will release an alarm pheromone that alerts other colony members to attack.

Daubers

They’re shiny black or brown, orange or yellow, with black markings, but have no wings and are not social wasps. Mud daubers build their nests in sheltered areas such as under eaves of houses, under decks, in attics and wall voids. Mud daubers don’t defend their nests aggressively like other species of wasps do. If a mud dauber is accidentally disturbed while building its nest it will usually fly away rather than attack. The western yellow jacket (Vespula pensylvanica) is also sometimes referred to as a mud dauber. Western Yellow jackets can be found in every part of Canada except for some of the northern islands.

Paper Wasps

These wasps are dusty yellow to black or dark brown in color. Paper Wasps are between 1.9 and 2.5 cm long. They have a large, round abdomen with three noticeable petioles (legs) and six obvious black stripes on their abdomens.

Paper wasps are social wasps and make their nests by gluing together plant fibers to form paper-like tubes. These nests can have multiple chambers, which house several generations of colony members over a single summer. Each spring, new queens and males leave their old colonies and mate to create new ones elsewhere.

Cicada killer wasps

In particular, cicada killer wasps are two inches long and abdomen is black with yellow markings. They can also be identified by their loud buzzing sound while they fly.

Cicadas are solitary wasps that build underground burrows in which they live and lay their eggs. They will emerge to mate and produce offspring. The cicada killer wasp is a predator of cicadas, and it is also very common in areas where there is a lot of traffic like lawns, especially near trees or shrubs with large root systems.

The female digs a hole about three inches deep, into which she places an egg along with paralyzed cicadas she has captured. She then seals up her chamber before flying off to find more food for her young.

Bald-faced Hornets

The bald-faced hornet is one of North America’s largest native wasps. It’s 1.4 inches in length with black and ivory white markings, making it easy to recognize. Though they are not known to sting people frequently, they can deliver a painful sting, especially if they feel threatened. Wasp nests are made up of many individual cells that are constructed by workers as part of their efforts to collect food for future generations. The cells serve as homes for eggs and larva after being built and closed with hard resin.
