What Are Spiders?

Spiders are arachnids, a class of arthropods that also includes scorpions, ticks, and mites. They have 8 legs and two body parts. They have no antennae, wings, or visible ears. There are over 43,000 species of spiders found worldwide. Spiders come in all shapes and sizes; some are so small they can fit on your fingernail while others can reach up to 10 inches in length.

Spiders can vary in color; some are brown, black, or even red or yellow. Their patterns also vary; they may have stripes, spots, or no pattern at all. Most spiders spin webs for catching prey but there are other types of spiders that hunt their prey on foot.

Spiders are predators that feed on insects, other spiders, and small animals. Their fangs inject venom into their prey. Once they have injected their prey with venom, they wrap them in silk before eating them.
